ABOUT THE GLOBAL RECORD / EDITION 1.0

Computing history belongs to more than one place.

codinghistory.world is an independent research project mapping the technologies, institutions, people, labor, languages and policies that shaped computing around the world.

Our scope

This publication is distinct from a technical source-code archive or a conventional invention timeline. Its unit of inquiry is situated history: who created, maintained, taught, adapted, translated, regulated, and accessed computing systems, with attention to where and when these activities occurred.

Neutrality is a method, not an absence of judgment

We disclose evidence and uncertainty, fairly examine competing interpretations, correct errors, and avoid endorsing actors or political positions. This does not require treating unsupported assertions as equivalent to well-documented findings. We distinguish what the source establishes from our interpretation of it.

Current edition limits

This is an initial static edition with ten research dossiers and one fully sourced field note. Coverage is highly selective and does not imply that unrepresented places or communities contributed less. The atlas uses schematic research windows rather than a comprehensive geospatial dataset.

How readers can participate

We invite locally sourced documents, testimony, translations and corrections. Evidence proposals are not automatically published, and the current static form prepares a local draft rather than transmitting it. A moderated submission backend will be introduced with the later WordPress edition.
